Governance
The WECAN Foundation has three governance bodies: the Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees and the General Assembly each with clearly defined and complementary responsibilities. Through this structure, WECAN ensures both effective executive leadership and independent oversight, reinforcing accountability, transparency and continuity in pursuing our mission.

Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is entrusted with the management and shaping the strategy of the Foundation. It is responsible for the strategic direction, policy development and overall administration of WECAN. The Board of Directors adopts and oversees the implementation of the Foundation’s strategy and goals, ensures sound financial management, prepares the annual accounts and policy plan, and represents the Foundation externally. In fulfilling its mandate, it acts in the interest of the Foundation and its operational organisation.
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees has a supervisory and advisory role. It oversees the policy of the Board of Directors and the general affairs of the Foundation. The Board of Trustees ensures that WECAN operates in accordance with its Statutes and Operating Rules, safeguards compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements, and verifies that the Foundation’s charitable and tax-exempt status is not jeopardised. It adopts the annual financial statements and may inspect the Foundation’s books and records.

Past Chairs of WECAN
Since its founding in 2015, WECAN has grown into one of the most influential umbrella organisations in European cancer patient advocacy. Over the past decade, six dedicated chairs have led the network, shaped its evolution, and strengthened its role in uniting 24 umbrella organisations across 27+ cancer types. In early 2025, WECAN reached a milestone by transitioning into a Foundation, further solidifying its impact and commitment to advancing patient advocacy across Europe.
